| Posted: | | | | I've been updating my countries of origin, and after running into problems and doubts (for one film I was trying to track down the production company's address), I found that Yahoo Movies shows the correct CoO every time. You just have to go to Yahoo Movies, find the movie, and click on Movie Details. The last item is Country of Origin. If they don't know (for obscure old movies) it's not listed. example | | | |

| Posted: | | | | 1. Using the same site each time brings legal issues. 2. The forum consensus has been to use the country of origin of the first production company listed in the credits. 3. Yahoo Movies is not accurate every time anyway. It's wrong about LOTR, for example. The CoO is New Zealand, but Yahoo Movies lists United States. http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1807537463/details | | | Last edited: by Squirrelecto |

ok. not that i like picking nits, but 1. Are legal issues brought on by using the same site to complete every dvd data, or for a specific field in a few DVDs? I've had a lot of trouble, first trying to determine what was the primary filming company, and then, where is it located. Dogville for instance is particularly troublesome, with companies in the Netherlands, Denmark, and the UK. 2. Ok. I went and found this thread, and the consensus seems to be that the CoO should be the primary filming company, not the first listed as production in the credits. 3. You're right, I shouldn't make broad generalizations, but on this thread, Gerri Cole says LOTR is US. Although I have no problem New Zealanding it. It was filmed by Wingnut, after all... so... i don't think there is a clear consensus, or rule, yet. Also, I don't want to start a new thread arguing CoO, so let me restate my point: Yahoo movies could be helpful for users trying to determine CoO, despite the fact that WHAT this CoO should be, exactly, isn't yet defined.

| Posted: | | | | I believe that the legal issues talked about are concerns about copyright theft. Sites like IMDB and Yahoo! Movies claim that the information held in their database is their copyright and therefore using the information in another database is copyright theft. It's a bit of a grey area legally speaking, as others claim you can't claim copyright on such information, but nobody (especially a small software company) is prepared to take the risk! So that's why the official stance has always been that we'd dont use other online databases for our information, but collect it directly from the film itself. And as for LOTR CoO, please don't start that again! But you're right, we don't take the first company listed, we use the primary production company. Unfortunately we think (it's never been confirmed) that Gerri made a mistake in her example, claiming that LOTR is a US production. Unfortunately there's been no official retraction/confirmation so the debate still rages... |

| Posted: | | | | I guess perhaps we need to decide whether "Country of Origin" should lie with the actual production company that makes the film, or the "Studio" making it. Like with LOTR, Wingnut (Production Company) is in New Zealand, but New Line (Studio) is in the USA. And to make such a statement that Gerri made a mistake? Horrors!!! I think everyone should take a few steps back, just to make sure you don't get hit by the fallout once she puts her wrath upon you!!! |

Well, we're only talking about Country of Origin. It would be pretty hard for Yahoo Movies to prove that a CoO entry in Profiler was taken from their database. | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

It would be pretty hard for Yahoo Movies to prove that a CoO entry in Profiler was taken from their database. yeah, and I'd like to ammend my previous statement that I use Yahoo Movies' CoO only to give me an idea before going through a DVD's credits, finding the company, and then travelling to the CoO in question to find the company's address by use of a public pay-phone yellow pages book. Then I go to the actual address listed, and ask the receptionist if they are, indeed, the production company for the film in question, and if the country below my feet is indeed the country where said company is based on. Finally, so I don't get sued by the receptionist, I go to the place where filming took place and collect forensic evidence to determine for myself that said film was shot there by said company. And just to be clear, I group movies and do this for a bunch of them at the same time, not individually. I'm not an idiot.

Won't do, as you're forgetting to obtain a copy of the driver's license application of the receptionist. That way, your chain of documentation breaks when naming the receptionist without documentation. But you're probably collecting an awful lot of frequent flyer miles... | | | Lutz |

I'm not sure if that's good enough documentation for this database, I'd expect a DNA sample and written statement from all cast and crew minimum, with birth dertificates of course... that goes without saying. |

It's the fact that you've said: "go to Yahoo Movies, find the movie, and click on Movie Details." If Invelos were seen to be endorsing this in any way or inferring that this was the correct way to do it, they could be sued. Honestly. They live in America! |

I see what you mean... so let me clarify, so that any vult... lawyers reading this don't take me out of context and meaning: I meant that I'd go to the offices of yahoo, at the department "yahoo movies", i'd find the movie, the dvd i bought, within my messy briefcase, and.... and... oh heck... ran out of steam. the joke got old in my brain and died The other night, in the netherland between wake and sleep, i thought of such a funny joke, stand-up style, and i made a mental note to remember it... but now i only remember the mental note _________________ -Like flaming globes, sigmund!!
